1897: What else was happening around then?

  • The first rules of golf are published by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrew’s Golf Committee.
  • Scottish Trades Union Congress and the Automobile Association are founded.
  • Dracula, The Invisible Man and Country Life are all published for the first time and Scottish businessman and philanthropist, Sir Isaac Wolfson is born.
  • The year before in 1896, Glasgow’s subway opened, and the following year in 1898, the doors of the People’s Palace swung open for the first time.
  • And just three years later in 1900, a Companies Act is passed requiring that all limited companies must produce an audited balance sheet annually… and as they say the rest is history!
