Speaker biographies

Euan Ferries, Corporate Advisory Senior Manager, Martin Aitken & Co

Euan has over 25 years corporate finance experience which includes advising clients on transactions such as acquisitions and disposals, due diligence and working with start-ups and growing businesses in areas such as business planning and sourcing growth funding from both private and public secthomtor funders. Euan also has valuable experience gained out with the profession which enabled him to understand first-hand the day to day and strategic commercial challenges facing owner-managers and FDs.

Deyrick Smith (MCIBS) - Area Manager Commercial - West of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank

Deyrick has over 29 years of experience in banking having worked in a number of business areas including Retail banking, Credit Decisioning and Corporate and Acquisition Finance. Deyrick has spent the last 20 years managing a team of Relationship Managers within Clydesdale’s Commercial Banking division.

Brian Hale, Manager, LINC Scotland - The Scottish Angel Capital AssociationMACO invest

The Scottish Angel Capital Association, brings together Private Investors (Business Angels) and Small to medium size companies requiring Equity finance for start-up or growth. Brian has worked for LINC since 1999 and is the West of Scotland Manager based in Glasgow. Besides awareness raising and investor recruitment, his main function is making early stage assessment of how ‘Investor Ready’ a company actually is and takes a preliminary view of its suitability for consideration by the players within the private investment marketplace in Scotland.

Rick Allison, Commercial Market Intelligence Manager, Scotland Food & Drink

Rick is responsible for the management of member research and data requirements across retail, foodservice and public sector projects. During his time at SF&D he has added more than £2.5m incremental sales value to companies that have engaged with the Scotland Food & Drink UK Market Intelligence service. Rick supports companies of all sizes providing data, insights and market intelligence reports which are tailored for each company and provides valuable support, that helps growing companies, in particular, to develop their businesses across local, Scotland-wide and UK-wide markets.

Derek Hanlan, Associate Director Tax, Martin Aitken & Co

Derek is tax qualified and has 15+ years of experience in advising SMEs and owner-managed on tax compliance and finance raising & transactional related taxes. He advises on succession issues in family-run businesses and provides assistance to business start-ups, including EIS and SEIS companies. Derek has significant expertise in business structures and valuations and also advises the directors/shareholders of the business on remuneration planning, capital allowances, R&D tax credits and patent box claims.

Mark Wilson, Food and Drink Specialist & Senior Manager, Clydesdale Bank

Mark Wilson has spent 30 years in Clydesdale Bank working in Commercial Banking, Corporate Finance and M&A. Mark has run relationship manager and business development teams throughout Scotland. Currently he is the West of Scotland lead for Food and Drink for the Bank and a Senior Manager in the Business Banking Operational Strategy team.

Graham Young, Industry Development Director, Scotland Food & DrinkIcons 15

Graham was responsible for the development of the Ambition 2030 Scottish Food and Drink Strategy and will oversee the development and delivery of an action plan to help the industry realise the potential outlined in the strategy.  Graham will be working with a wide range of industry organisations, the Scottish Government and Enterprise Agencies to deepen collaboration between these bodies and support the achievement of the ambitious targets. Prior to joining the organisation Graham was at the helm of Seafood Scotland, the trade bodies responsible for business development and the marketing of wild caught seafood. Graham’s background in the dairy and seafood industries saw him work in technical, operations and brand development roles.

Thomas McPake, Relationship Manager Commercial - West of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank

Joining the Bank in 2008, Thomas has worked in a variety of roles including Relationship Management, Business Development, Credit and Restructuring. At present, he is providing dedicated relationship management to SME's and Commercial Businesses in a variety of sectors across the West of Scotland.
