Looking back and looking ahead

We were delighted to support the FGDP UK Scotland Study Day on Friday 1 December at the Glasgow Science Centre.

The study day once again has a range of excellent speakers, including two legends of the dental world, Trevor Burke and Terry Donovan. They presented an in-depth session which focused on an examination of the evolution of cements and bonding, an evidence-based evaluation of ceramic systems and management of the deep carious lesion.

Jayne Clifford and the MACO Dentistry accounting and finance team hosted a session for the Glasgow University BDS5 group in the Science Show Theatre. The session drew upon the experiences of five recent graduates who are now Associates operating in practices in Scotland and Dubai. The video-blog sessions provided the undergraduates with a range of practical insights into what they will experience when they enter practice, as well as giving them a range of tips on managing their self-employed career.

Colette Callaghan, Craig Keating and Iain Stirling, Martin Aitken & Co, provided the BDS5's with talks on self-employment taxes, preparing to meet with your accountant and developing the practice's business plan.

If you attended the session and would like to discuss any of the issues raised on the day, book an appointment at one of Finance & Tax Surgeries for new Associates & VTs in 2018.

Big Smile: World Record

Big smile world record attempt 2017

Hundreds of people participated in the Big Smile Big Band event, which took place at the SECC Glasgow on the 9th June 2017, including University of Glasgow Dental School and other University staff, Dental alumni, school children and teachers from the Glasgow area, and of course, Martin Aitken & Co.

Participants wore red and white ponchos and formed the lips and teeth of a giant smile to highlight the importance of oral health.

Professor Jeremy Bagg, Head of the Dental School at the University of Glasgow, said: “I am delighted that we were able to achieve our aim of assembling a world record number of participants in the shape of a big smile as Glasgow’s contribution to National Smile Month and I sincerely hope that Guinness World Records will verify this as the world’s biggest smile”. The World Record Attempt was subsequently confirmed by Guinness.

A big well done smile to all involved!
